PRODUCTIVITY 4.0

ABOUT US

Africa Productivity Specialists (APS) was established to achieve perhaps one of the most challenging yet fulfilling tasks any African individual or organization can embark on – to restore Africa’s greatness in the eyes of its people.

OUR MISSION

It is our business, to make it our business, to ensure that as many persons partake in the
productivity improvement process on the African continent.

WHO WE ARE

Africa Productivity Specialists is an operations and productivity improvement institution established to implement the Productivity Agenda on the African continent. Our objective is to promote the mainstreaming of continuous productivity improvement across all economic sectors through the harnessing of Fourth Industrial Revolution technology. Ultimately, the continent must understand that its greatness is embedded in its collective effort and that AFRICA IS ONE SYSTEM.

WHAT WE DO

APS coordinates the implementation of productivity improvement in the SADC economic region and in the rest of Africa. We aim to increase the competitiveness of educational and commercial industries by creating a skilled workforce that can improve the continent’s productivity levels. APS devotes particular attention to enhance public sector productivity, this being the sector that manages the most critical factors of the external environment

PRODUCTIVITY 4.0

Productivity 4.0 is the efficiency and effectiveness with which resources are combined and utilized applying  Fourth Industrial Revolution technology (4IR) such as Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and 3D Printing to produce quality goods and services.

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

We have a combined experience of 25 years of Operations Management and the systematic design, direction, and control of processes that transform inputs into services and products.

Through collaborative planning and forecasting, we combine the intelligence of multiple supply-chain partners with the procurement activities that may be integrated with various shipping, warehousing, and inventory activities to form a logistics system.  At APS, we show you the essential tools you will need to improve process performance in an economy in which both customers and suppliers are located across the world. APS powers the supply chain to greater sales and profits through effective applications of the concepts, tools, and techniques of Operations Management. We link processes to customers and suppliers to provide competitive supply chains that create wealth for businesses and improve the living standard of citizens. APS has the technical know-how to manage processes that achieve efficient flows of materials, information, and funds by tapping into our knowledge of the global implications of supply chains and decision-making in a dynamic environment.

PRODUCTIVITY AGENDA FOR AFRICA

The objective of the Productivity Agenda for Africa is to increase the value, productivity, and competitiveness of the African economies and to inculcate a productivity culture of people in Africa. It aims to promote the use of productivity approaches, techniques, tools, and processes by all stakeholders. This includes the establishment and support of National Productivity Centres (NPC) and the strengthening of existing ones. The success of the Agenda requires continental and regional infrastructures to drive and coordinate the productivity movement in Africa. The approach is to promote productivity in key sectors of the economies, in particular the informal economy, SMEs, public/parastatal sector, industry, and communities. Africa Productivity Specialists (APS) is committed to the successful implementation of this Agenda.

AFCFTA

The African Continental Free Trade Agreement has compelled African governments to create an enabling environment for innovation and thereby establish flexible, fast, and competitive services. We at APS help governments transition to new technological and economic frameworks by promoting the use of joint ICT infrastructure and standardizing customs procedures. The use of Productivity 4.0 tools provides the speed of the customs clearing processes, which is necessary for effective trade facilitation. This includes the use of a Trade Portal to serve as channels of information flow. APS offers the tools that provide global shipping transactions with a secure, real-time exchange of supply-chain data and paperwork – reducing costs, eliminating delays, and making the trade environment more predictable for conducting intra-African trade. Africa Productivity Specialists is heavily contributing to the successful implementation of the AfCFTA by providing training to traders and border officials to apply the technical tools for implementing and measuring trade facilitation.

BLOCKCHAIN

Blockchain technology is a decentralized global network of computers that jointly manage a database using cryptography. Blockchain is radically reshaping society and economies by redesigning structures and re-conceptualize how we organize every aspect of society, economy, and technology infrastructure. This technology offers ample opportunities to boost African productivity. Blockchain can eliminate corruption as it cannot be controlled by any single entity. This technological platform strengthens the capacity for continental collaboration between institutions and countries.

USES OF BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY

AREA OF APPLICATION

FUNCTIONAL APPLICATION

Supply Chain Management

Accounting

Healthcare

Elections

Record keeping

Track the movement of goods, their origin and quantity, etc

Eliminate human error and protect data from tampering

Enable different service providers to collaborate around the patient’s needs

Provide full transparency and eliminate fraud

Record data of birth certificates, taxes, identity, land registry

A blockchain is an effective tool for verifying proof of existence, full records, and the ownership or origin of exchanged information.

We, however, need an enabling environment wherein people are educated, skilled, trained, and where government policies are aligned with the use of this technology. We at APS are committed to collaborating with various African governments to actively run blockchain pilots. It is predicted that, by 2025, at least 10 percent of global GDP will be stored on blockchain-related technology. The strategic value of blockchain within existing business operations can be fully realized if commercially viable solutions can be deployed at scale. The issue is agreeing on the governance decisions around how the system, data, and investment in blockchain will be led and managed.

3D PRINTING – ADITIVE MANUFACTURING

3D Printing creates physical objects from a computer design by mimicking biological processes.

This is achieved by creating products layer-by-layer, which is why it is also called additive manufacturing. All 3D printing processes require software, hardware, and materials to work together. Components previously made in multiple manufacturing steps can be combined into a single-step production, going directly from raw materials to finished products. 3D printing technology uses far less material than traditional manufacturing methods, which is good for sustainability and our environment. We consult and collaborate with governments and private institutions to develop strategies to maximize the benefits of additive manufacturing. To stay ahead, business leaders and policymakers need to understand the technology and its implications to develop forward-looking strategies and policies. Broad 3DP adoption could have important effects on manufacturing, trade, customs, and supply chains. Countries with a trainable workforce can jump-start their manufacturing base with low capital investment.

USES OF 3D PRINTING

HEALTHCARE

3D printing is used to develop new surgical cutting and drill guides, prosthetics as well as the creation of patient-specific replicas of bones, organs, and blood vessels.

CONSTRUCTION

3D technology is making house building more affordable – buildings can be custom-built quickly using 3DP of construction materials.

INDUSTRY

Used in the customizable gifts industry, spare parts, to assess stress load, metal fabrication, etc.

BENEFITS OF 3D PRINTING

1. Only the required quantities of products are printed, customizing every single product, and reducing waste.

2. Products are made just in time, reducing inventory levels and delivery times.

3. Products are made close to their consumption, reducing cost, lead time, supply chain risk, and CO2 emissions.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

AI is about teaching machines to become smart.  AI innovation is profoundly impacting our lives and the world around us. Intelligence was previously thought of as the providence of humans but not anymore as machines are now moving beyond just being programmed to learning by themselves, to a point where we are now witnessing machine-human collaboration. AI helps with our navigation, creates art, integrates with our bodies, automates processes, and boosts productivity. Since AI is already fundamentally changing life on our planet, we have to strategically apply it to revolutionize everyday life on our African continent through work, the economy, communications, and medicine. Africa Productivity Specialists are particularly involved in coordinating mass collaboration on the continent to harness the amazing power of AI for the collective good of the continent. Universities, governments, start-ups, research firms as well as the African diaspora are key stakeholders and partners in pursuit of the African AI domination.

DATA SCIENCE

How do we extract the most information possible from a massive amount of data to solve some of the problems today? By applying the principle of big data. From the way we invest our money, find new customers for our businesses, conduct agricultural activities, and extract all types of insight is all contained in the big data ecosystem. The ability structure data to the point of use drives Africa Productivity Specialists data goals. And this requires input from a vast amount of collaborators from all corners of the continent.
